Ristorante Favoloso
Nestled in the heart of Colchester, Ristorante Favoloso is one of those hidden culinary gems that you wish you had discovered sooner. Located at 2-4 Balkerne Passage, CO1 1PA, this Italian restaurant delivers an experience that goes far beyond just dinner-it’s a journey through Italy’s finest coastal and countryside flavors, plated with flair and served in a setting that oozes authenticity.
From the moment you step into Ristorante Favoloso, you’ll notice its cozy, intimate vibe. The restaurant doesn’t offer delivery or takeaway, which immediately sets the tone: this is a place meant for slow, satisfying dine-in experiences. Whether you're dining solo or enjoying a romantic evening, the ambiance is perfect for relaxed conversations and savoring every bite. There’s no wheelchair-accessible car park, so that’s something to note if accessibility is a priority.
What sets Ristorante Favoloso apart is its impeccably curated menu. The chefs here have mastered both the classics and more adventurous seafood options. If you’re someone who usually orders “the usual,” this might be the place to shake things up.
One of the top recommendations? The Seafood Risotto-it’s rich, creamy, and brimming with perfectly cooked prawns, mussels, and tender calamari. Then there’s the Tagliatelle, handmade and tossed in sauces that feel both nostalgic and new. Craving something indulgent? Try the Duck Breast with Plum Sauce, a dish that balances sweet and savory better than most high-end bistros.
Seafood lovers will be spoiled for choice. The Fritto Misto offers a crispy, golden medley of calamari and shrimp, while the Scallops and Lobster Tails feel straight out of an Amalfi Coast trattoria. For those preferring something traditional, the Spaghetti Carbonara and Spaghetti Bolognese are as close to nonna’s recipe as you’ll find in the UK.
And the desserts? Let's just say they’re worth a visit on their own. Their Tiramisu is indulgent without being overly sweet, while the sorbet selections are refreshing, especially when paired with one of their excellent dessert wines.
Speaking of wine, Ristorante Favoloso boasts an impressive wine list. Whether you’re a seasoned sommelier or just someone who enjoys a good glass of red, you’ll appreciate the thoughtful curation. The staff are happy to recommend pairings-don’t hesitate to ask. The selection includes full-bodied Italian reds, crisp whites, and even a few lesser-known varietals that are perfect complements to the menu’s seafood-forward dishes.
Alongside wine, they also serve spirits, beer, and freshly brewed coffee-another highlight. It’s the kind of coffee that makes you pause mid-conversation and say, “This is really good.”
There’s something unpretentious about Ristorante Favoloso. It doesn’t try too hard to be trendy or flashy. Instead, it leans into the authentic Italian charm, which is exactly what makes it special. The décor is warm and minimalist, with small touches that hint at its Mediterranean roots.
Service is friendly and knowledgeable, with a team that clearly cares about what they serve. Whether you’re asking for wine pairings or requesting a modification to your dish, they handle it with ease and a smile.
One pleasant surprise at Ristorante Favoloso is their healthy options. While Italian cuisine is often associated with indulgence, this spot does a great job offering flavorful, health-conscious alternatives without compromising on taste. The cauliflower-based dishes, grilled sea bass, and whole turbot are great examples of this balanced approach.
If you’ve been searching for a place in Colchester that combines excellent food, an inviting atmosphere, and a sense of occasion without the pretentiousness, Ristorante Favoloso checks all the boxes. It's perfect for solo dinners, special evenings out, or whenever you're craving a true Italian experience close to home.

Wow. Lived in Colchester for 5 years and no idea how I missed this gem. Great atmosphere and decor. Makes you feel like you are in the Med. Food was world class and I'm definitely coming back. The crab starter was out of this world and lobster main amazing.
The food is really nice, and the staff is very attentive.
My favourite restaurant in Colchester. The staff and manager and his wife are all 10/10 at their job. The food is amazing every single time. If you want the best seafood in colchester then come here!
Lovely food so will return. Asked for 1 piece of bread to soak up juice on starter and charged £2.95 so won't be doing that again. Tables too close together so go early before they fill up.
the starters were lovely, the turbot main was okay but was a bit bland. the steak was raw on either end but cooked in the middle which was a bit confusing but i suppose it’s not a steak restaurant so somewhat understandable. the tables were way too close together so it felt like we were dining with strangers.
